Herbal Benefits for your Pet

by Bruce Maul

There are instances when I would notice my dog distressed and seemingly immobile from the
inert position that he had been in for quite a few hours.  I would assume that the canine is
inflicted with some kind of stomach trouble, having lost his appetite and being way too
sluggish for play.  I’d think it’s time to take him to the local vet, but after a while he would walk
away towards the lawn, lie there for a few minutes and sniff through the plants.  Imagine my
surprise when he would come back, moments later, as the same old playful pup, ready to eat
his meals and obviously full of life. Maybe a breath of fresh air did well to revive his strength,
ending his misery. But then again, there’s more to that than a simple stroll on the lawn that
cured the canine. That’s for sure.

Much like humans, animals also recognize the therapeutic powers of plants.  Fact is, your pet
dog or pet cat is actually skillful in seeking out certain herbs and plants that would help their
bodies recuperate should they get ill or seriously injured.  Herbs contain alkaloids that help
them thwart off predators, operating like a built-in defense mechanism. The same alkaloids
synthesized by herbs and plants often contain medicinal properties that promote a healing
effect on animals.

We are quite familiar with the curative benefits of applying herb extracts to humans and how
our forefathers relied on
herbal medication to help them restore their health, right?  But did you
know that animals were the first ones to actually discover the medicinal properties of herbs?
Notice how your pet cat gets rejuvenated following an illness after sniffing into plants or herbs.
It’s instinctive for them to search for these natural cures.

Herbs provide a threshold of health benefits to pets, much like it does for people.  Since pets
can’t usually seek these healing substances in nature, it would rightly serve their health and
well being to feed them with a regular dose of herbal treats or directly administer it to them
whenever they get sick. The modern day cat or dog owner need not worry about the
inconveniences of physically finding or synthesizing said herb extracts since there are a
handful of herbal medication and health supplements, both online and in many pet stores, that
are specifically formulated for the intake of pets. So whether the canine or feline is suffering
from arthritis, indigestion, or probably just stressed out, there is an
herbal pet remedy out there
in bottled form to help end your pet’s malady.
